Antonio da Trento’s “Martyrdom of Two Saints” – Conservation Treatment // Museum Artwork | LACMA Associate Paper Conservator Erin Jue

As part of the research for the exhibition “The Chiaroscuro Woodcut in Renaissance Italy”, technical study was undertaken of a newly acquired, early impression of Antonio da Trento’s Martyrdom of Two Saints. The print was purchased for this purpose by the Prints and Drawings Department in 2012, its compromised condition making it a suitable candidate for extensive instrumental analyses. This video documents the conservation treatment of the print, and highlights findings that contributed to a larger study of the materials, conservation, and preservation of Italian Renaissance chiaroscuro woodcuts.

Conservation & Exhibition Planning: Material Testing for Design, Display, & Packing | Presentation by Jennifer Kim at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

The planning for appropriate collection care before, during, and after display is dependent on accessing reliable information about the materials we use. The production of fabrics, painted surfaces, mounts, foams, and board materials facilitate the creative display of art objects. Understanding how these materials will react with artworks over time is a fundamentally challenging, but necessary, undertaking.

LACMA Unframed: Conservation Pool Party: The Washing and Bleaching of a Robert Rauschenberg Print | LACMA Associate Paper Conservator Erin Jue

As a pre-program conservation intern in the Paper Conservation Laboratory, I had the opportunity to help in the treatment of Robert Rauschenberg’s lithograph and screenprint, Booster, from the Booster and Seven Studies series. The print was discolored overall, with the exception of a small patch in the upper-right quadrant of the print. To reduce discoloration, the work of art was bleached by exposure to high-intensity light, a standard treatment protocol in paper conservation. This piece, however, was too large to be treated indoors. Insert the ideal conditions in Los Angeles. We took the treatment outside into the sunlight of this city.

LACMA Unframed: A Peek into Paper Conservation | LACMA Associate Paper Conservator Erin Jue

For every work of art on paper featured in an upcoming exhibition, our lab in conservation examines it to determine its condition and whether any treatment is needed. So when we received a woodblock print from Yoshitoshi’s Demons, an installation of works from one of Japan’s top print artists of the Meiji era (opening at LACMA tomorrow), we noticed a disfiguring gray patina over some of the image’s red areas. We immediately set to work trying to figure out whether the gray was intentional or a form of degradation.

LACMA Unframed: LACMA Paper Conservation Workshop Generously Funded by Linda Shaffer and Peter Loughrey | LACMA Associate Paper Conservator Erin Jue

The science and research surrounding art conservation is a dynamic and evolving field of study. The paper laboratory in the Conservation Center at the Los Angeles County of Museum of Art (LACMA) recently held an informative two-day workshop on aqueous cleaning and stain reduction for works of art on paper. The class included lectures as well as, hands-on training, highlighting the use of ammonium citrate di-/tri-basic, sodium borohydride and agarose gels.  The workshop was taught by Antoinette Dwan (private paper conservator from Northern California). The workshop would not have been possible without the generous support and funding by Linda Shaffer (private conservator from Shaffer Conservation) and Peter Loughrey (Director of Modern Design & Fine Art from Los Angeles Modern Auctions).
